Review date 20-09-1999: Jennifer Lopez - C.D. On the 6

As so many actors and actresses Jennifer Lopez decided to branch out into another area of the entertainment scene. Since the videoclip was introduced it has been easier for beautiful people to be rather succesfull in the music business without having any real musical talent. As midigating factors I should say that Lopez already once portrayed a singer in a movie and didn't do a bad job at that and that she originally started as a dancer.

"On the 6" has been a commercial success, mainly due to the first single from the album " If you had my love". This catchy song with the very sensual video became a worldwide hit and although at first I was very sceptic about it, later I began to really like it and have to say it is a good song. BUT I cannot find any song on the album I could give the same qualification. The music which Lopez herself describes as latin pop is in no way surprising or innovating, which doesn't necessarily means it isn't any good. This latin pop, which probably wants to be a mix between popular music in Backstreet Boys-style and latin soul, bores me to death. Lopez's voice isn't bad (not as good as her body, but that's beside the point), but the type of music on this album, just plainly sucks and will never stand the test of time. If Lopez continues to make this type of music, she'll probably stay a one-hit-wonder, but on the other hand it often surprises me what type of shitty music (in my humble opinion) can become huge. The next single from the album will be "Waiting for tonight", which has also been translated into a Spanish version on the CD "Una noche mas". Just as there are 2 versions of a duet with latin star Marc Anthony. "No me ames" has been put in a tropical version and as a plain ballad, both don't deserve a second listen. I could tell you more about the songs, but why bother. My advice don't buy this album and Jennifer stick to acting or make a whole different kind of music. Something you can put your heart into, not this commercial crap. My rate: a 4.0 .
