Review date 13-04-1999: Liquido - C.D. Liquido

Liquido is a new and sensationally fast rising German band. Their single "Narcotic" stormed the charts in their homeland and now does the same in the rest of Europe. Among others it reached number one in Ralphy's Dutch Top Ten. The band consists of four musicians: guitarist Tim Eiermann, keyboard-player Wolfgang Schrödl, on drums Wolle Maier and on bass Stefan Schulte-Holthaus. Tim and Wolfgang also do the vocal parts along with female guest singer Stefanie Nerpel. I prefer Wolfgang's voice to Tim's because his hoarse vocals give an extra dimension to the songs of Liquido.

After the huge success of "Narcotic" they naturally had to follow up with an album. On this debut CD you'll find 11 songs of very diverse character, but it underlines the sound generated with "Narcotic". Although Liquido is a rock band their music has a lot of poppy influences. With most rock bands the guitar is the leading instrument, with Liquido that's often not the case. Their music features a lot of keyboard-sounds of 80's bands like Nena and the guitar (and other instruments) form a rock sound wall behind that. Sometimes that works excellently like on "Narcotic", on other occassions it will repell the real guitar freaks from the band like on the new single "Doubledecker (in which Stefanie does the lead vocals), but it certainly makes Liquido different from other bands. As I am more into rock as into pop the other rock songs on the album, the closer "Saturday rocks" and the formidable "Clicklesley" are most to my liking, but there is something for everyone on the album and the band certainly seems capable of musical growth, so we'll see what the future brings. I heard that they maybe would play at the Bospop-festival in Holland (PS they didn't). Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing them live any time soon. The album in total I rate with a 7.0.
